Gay Party In Takoradi

About two hundred suspected homosexuals have held two separate birthday parties in Sekondi-Takoradi.The first party, held at the Takoradi Shippers’ Council Hall was strictly by invitation while the second was at the Last Hour Beach Resort. As Kweku Owusu Peprah of Radio Max narrated, he managed to enter the venue after explaining at the gate that he was invited but had forgotten his invitation card at home.According to him, he was shocked upon seeing the way men had adorned themselves and were flirting with each other. He said some of the men were holding ladies bags and purses and wore tight jeans and equally tight T-Shirts, while others were also in anklets and silky wrappers tied to their waists.“I was amazed at what I saw…A young man joined me at the table and after sitting for a few minutes, he pulled out a handbag with a make-up pack and started applying the make-up just as the women do. At this point I could not stay any longer, so I quietly walked out,” Owusu Peprah revealed.According to him, investigations have revealed that most of the gay men at the party have female sex partners and are gays “only for commercial reasons”. Some, he said, are actually bread winners of their families.Commenting on the issue, Dr. Ronald Sowah of the Efia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital said a situation where gays keep female sex partners poses a threat to their health since they and their partners are equally vulnerable to STDs.

ATO YANNEYS ‘HIS MAJESTY’S SERGEANT’ RE-LAUNCHED.

The veteran Writer and Director of Flamboyant films located within the Tema metropolis on Monday re-launched his movie titled ‘HIS MAJESTY’S SERGEANT’ which took place in Burma in 1944. At the launch in Accra, the writer and director called on Government to reposition the movie industry to regain its past glory and most importantly have the potentials of contributing effectively towards the country in terms of resources. Giving some synopsis of his movie ‘HIS MAJESTY’S SERGEANT’ he said “The year is 1944. The Battle of World War II, in all theatres-the Pacific, South-east Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean- are at their fiercest. In the jungle Burma Battle-hardened West Africa soldiers are locked up in uncompromising racially-tinged battle, with the invincible forces of imperial Japan, intoxicated with the determination to overrun South-East Asia.
Of all the nationalities in the camp of the allies. It is those from colonies, who find themselves in a psychological fix, as they find themselves fighting in a war, to defend the freedom of their colonial maters.
It is this situation that Jafa, an Africa sergeant, finds himself in a cave with Singh an Indian Corporal and Jake, a British private. Before they can settle, Jake starts to assert his assumed racial superiority.
‘I am a sergeant in the armed forces of his majesty the king’
‘I have never even shaken hands with a black in all my life. And so stop dreaming.
After a brutal punch-to-kill fight, Jake takes leave of them to avoid what he deems a racial humiliation. On his way to only god knows where, he finds himself in an enemy trap. Jafa saves him. Forced to return to the cave, his odium for Jafa does not ebb.
They beat off attack upon attack from the enemy. All this time, Jake who has heard of African juju, which some Africans carry to their bodies to repel bullets, tries to find out whether, or not, Jafa has one
Singh on watch outside runs in to inform them that an overwhelming attack threatens and darts back. As jafa, his mind in turmoil, tries to find a way out of the sticky situation. Jake disarms him and starts taunting him, his gun trained on him menacingly. From outside, fierce shooting sound fills the cave. A strident sound of a gun report shakes the cave. It turns out to be Singh’s gun. He runs in and disarms Jake.
Jafa and Singh organize themselves to leave the cave, Jake refuses to go. Jafa starts to use force to get him out with them. A struggle ensues. A bullet from outside hits Jake’s right arm. He does not release his grip on Jake’s body. A second bullet slams the side of Jake’s body, hurling him to the floor.
A small group of allied soldiers enter the cave. Before Jafa follows Singh and others out, he kneels down near Jake’s body and with fingers trembling uncontrollably, slides into place, his eye lids, which are open in death.”
Mr.Yanney also call on all film and cinema companies around the world to help in showcasing this hilarious and taught provoking movie “ HIS MAJESTY’S SERGEANT” to all persons around the globe.

Veep receives "President Obour" at the Castle

Ace musician Kwabena Obour on yesterday took his 'music train' to the seat of government to enlist the support of Vice President John Mahama in a literacy campaign aimed at inculcating reading habits in the youth. With the aid of a laptop computer, the hiplife singer, popularly called "President Obour", played compositions of the campaign dubbed "Ghana Reads" to the Vice President at the Castle, Osu. The compositions, which feature a popular comedian and an actor Agya Koo, are a medley of earlier versions of Obour's advocacy campaign. However, this time around, it employs a school setting as the backdrop to accentuate the fundamental nature of reading in the making of a successful citizen. The autographical line, "Meka (I will say it), me Kwabena Bour meka", is heavily felt in the rendition as Obour positions himself as a linguist to advocate the importance of education to holistic development to his subjects.Receiving the star, Vice President Mahama commended Obour for using his artistic endeavours in promoting peace and academic development among the youth and assured him his support. The Vice President said he supported the project because it seeks to instil literacy habits in the youth, who have almost completely abandoned the knack of reading, in preference of pastimes such as video viewing and playing cyber games. He noted that such attitudes were wrong and that nations must be built on the basis of ideas and knowledge and not merely through amusement pursuits."Books are the food for the mind and it is more important to feed your mind than to feed your stomach".Vice President Mahama was sad that the contemporary Ghanaian student read purposely for examinations, thus acquiring little or no pedagogy beyond his chosen field of study. He said a manifestation of this state of affair was the near desertion of public libraries except during examination periods. Rather, he said, it was time the youth acknowledged the fact that success in life, especially in the public sphere, hinged largely on being a fervent learner, who is willing to expand his mind so as to broaden possibilities in life.Obour said in addition to whipping up public interest about the importance of literacy, the campaign also intended to establish 10 community libraries. He said over the next one year, he intended to engage school authorities in forming reading clubs and encourage the establishment of more libraries nationwide.Nana Yaw Osei-Darkwa, Executive Director of Youth Icons, called for massive public support for the campaign.

Harry Potter's spell broken

An elite squad of guinea pigs has worked its own brand of magic at the box office, taking the No. 1 spot from boy wizard Harry Potter. The 3-D "G-Force" was the top movie at the box office this weekend, opening with $32.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Walt Disney release from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, with its mixture of live action and computer-generated animation, is a "Mission: Impossible"-style adventure. It features voiceover work from Nicolas Cage, Sam Rockwell, Tracy Morgan and Penelope Cruz as resourceful rodents. Last week's No. 1 film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," came in a close second with an estimated $30 million. That's a whopping 61-percent drop from its huge opening last weekend of $79.5 million. Coming in third was another of the week's wide releases, the battle-of-the-sexes romantic comedy "The Ugly Truth," which had a $27 million opening. The sixth installment in the Harry Potter franchise has now made $222 million total, which is $14 million ahead of where part five, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," was after 12 days in theaters in 2007. And this week, "Half-Blood Prince" will start showing on 166 IMAX screens, which the last "Harry Potter" movie did from the start. "So we're coming in with this one (in IMAX) a little bit late, but it's going to be a great addition and it'll keep our momentum going," said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros.' head of distribution. "G-Force" triumphed in a crowded summer marketplace with its combination of 3-D effects and the Disney and Bruckheimer brands, said Mark Zoradi, president of Disney's motion-picture group. "You never go into a situation where you're competing against two important movies -- the second weekend of 'Harry Potter' and the opening weekend of 'The Ugly Truth' -- you never go in cocky," Zoradi said. The one-two of PG-rated movies reinforces the fact that summer is prime family movie time, said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "This summer is all about packaging and escapism," Dergarabedian said of the strong showing for "G-Force." "People were scratching their heads and dragging their kids to go see this thing. They were watching the trailers with absolute shock going, 'Is that really happening?' But as a kid you're like, 'I gotta go see it.' This is a testament to the fact that Jerry Bruckheimer, like ('Transformers' director) Michael Bay, knows exactly what summer movie audiences want." With $27 million, "The Ugly Truth" performed at the high end of Sony Pictures' expectations, said head of distribution Rory Bruer. "The chemistry between Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler is a blast. It's really a lot of fun, everything we'd hoped it would be," Bruer said. "From sneak previews to word-of-mouth screenings we had on the movie, we knew people liked the movie." Critics weren't so enamored, though: "The Ugly Truth" received just 15 percent positive reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes Web site. "If I have a choice of deciding between what the audience's opinion is going to be versus the critics', I'll definitely go with the audience's every day, and they spoke loud and clear," Bruer said. Also opening nationwide this weekend was another Warner Bros. release, the horror movie "Orphan," about a couple who adopts a little girl who's not nearly as sweet as she seems. It came in fourth place with $12.8 million. Expanding in its second week of limited release, the Fox Searchlight romantic comedy "500 Days of Summer" made $1.63 million. Going from 27 screens to 85, it's grossed just over $3 million. The critical hit stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel in an out-of-order tale of boy-meets-girl. On the other end of the cinematic spectrum, the dominant movie of the summer, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," is now the 10th-highest grossing film of all time with just over $379 million. The Paramount sequel made $8 million this weekend, pushing it past 2003's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," which made just over $377 million. Dergarabedian said movies like "Transformers," "Harry Potter" and the R-rated, surprise-hit comedy "The Hangover," which has now made over $247 million, have kept this summer's revenues right in line with 2008, when "The Dark Knight" was all the rage. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday. 1. "G-Force," $32.2 million. 2. "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," $30 million. 3. "The Ugly Truth," $27 million. 4. "Orphan," $12.8 million. 5. "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," $8.2 million. 6. "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," $8 million. 7. "The Hangover," $6.5 million. 8. "The Proposal," $6.4 million. 9. "Public Enemies," $4.2 million. 10. "Bruno," $2.7 million.

K. Rowling. It is the sixth film in the Harry Potter film series. It is directed by David Yates, the director of the fifth film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. David Heyman and David Barron produced the film. What makes Half-Blood Prince top-tier is the descent of darkness on the lives of the characters. The unseen Lord Voldemort cooks up fresh hell by planning to have Harry's archrival, the blond, bullying Draco Malfoy, kill wise old Professor Dumbledore. And then there's slithery Severus Snape (the great Alan Rickman) making a deal to protect Draco. All the actors excel at pulling us into the film's mysteries. Dutch return head of Ghana king

Dutch officials have handed back to Ghana the head of a king who was executed by colonists in the 1830s. Tribal elders led a ceremony in The Hague to hand over the head of Badu Bonsu II, stored in formaldehyde in a Dutch museum for 170 years. The king, who was leader of the Ahanta group, is believed to have been decapitated in retaliation for the killing of two Dutch emissaries.
Some believe the king would not be at rest unless his head was returned. Several Ghanaian traditional leaders - including a descendant of the king - held an emotional ritual during the handover at the Dutch foreign ministry. AFP news agency reported that they poured alcohol on the floor of the conference room while invoking the chief's spirit.
"It is because of the injustice meted out to our people that our great king, who was fighting for his people, was murdered," said Nana Kwekwe Darko III, who led the ceremony.
The Dutch foreign ministry said in a statement that King Bonsu had killed two Dutch officials in 1838 and was "handed over by his own nation" to colonialists. 'Hunted in the afterlife' Arthur Japin, a Dutch author who researched King Bonsu, says the head was brought to the Netherlands, possibly by mistake, shortly after the king was killed.
A Dutch general had been asked to bring back "heads" from Ghana to be studied by a famous phrenologist - a scientist who believes the character of a person can be determined by the shape of the skull. "He probably meant just some drawings of different types of people but the general took this literally and he took the head and put it in formaldehyde and put it on the ship," Mr Japin told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme. During the voyage home the general died, and he too was preserved in formaldehyde. On the expedition's return, King Bonsu's head was given to the Leiden University Medical Centre, where it has been ever since. After hearing of the head's location in 2008, Ghana filed a request for its return, saying if it remained unburied, the king would be incomplete and therefore "hunted in the afterlife". The traditional leaders are due to return to Ghana with the head on Friday.

Silverbird Ghana Tops Africa’s Box Office Charts with Harry Potter

The latest edition of Harry Potter – Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is currently making waves in the city of Accra at the Silverbird cinemas. Many movie fans keep trouping to the cinemas every day since the movie started showing over the weekend.
Silverbird Ghana currently tops the box office chart across East and West Africa beating all competitors including Lagos and Nairobi where movie culture, just a few months ago before the introduction of Silverbird in Accra, was much more entrenched than it was in Ghana. Silverbird Ghana has certainly come to deliver quality entertainment and Ghanaians are more than excited to embrace the revolution.
It is very gratifying to see the kids of Harry Porter Fame mature into young adults and doing things in more mature ways including romantic love brewing among them.
“We are happy to see our numerous audiences gripping the edge of their seats when seeing our movies. That is the kind of quality entertainment and satisfaction that Silverbird is committed to offering its customers. We show our movies the same time they start showing in all first rate cinemas across the globe” said Brooke Nuwati, Media Relations Officer for Silverbird Ghana.
This is a must-watch movie and you can better judge which is the best Harry Porter movie ever made and why so many people including families, friends and corporate bodies are filling the seats at the Silverbird cinemas every day. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is fast, cutting, and will have you gripping the edge of your seat, in an incredibly shocking and tragic climax.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a 2009 fantasy-adventure film based on the novel Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J. K. Radcliffe's growing maturity as Harry gives the role a touching gravity. His scenes with Dumbledore exude ferocity and emotion.

Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in deplorable state

Mr Kweku Manu-Asiamah, Director, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, on Thursday bemoaned the deplorable nature of the park and expressed the need to accelerate the rehabilitation efforts. "We operate under leaking roofs, cracked floors and poor lighting systems. In fact, Nkrumah's name and heritage do not match the condition under, which this park operates," he said.Addressing the dignitaries at a wreath laying ceremony as part of this year's PANAFEST/Emancipation cerebration, he praised the government for releasing one of Dr Nkrumah's old vehicles to the centre for exhibition and called for the release of his Rolls Royce as well. Mr Manu-Asiamah called on the government to follow-up on the United Nations decision to make the Park a World Heritage site, since it would boost tourism and uplift its image. He praised Nkrumah for championing the emancipation of the black race adding that he "incarnated the vision, humility, pride and the dignity of the black race world over".Mr Manu-Asiamah thanked government for approving the budget submitted for renovations on the mausoleum and urged the Executive not to delay the importation of renovation materials for the park since such delays could have dire consequences on the centenary celebrations of Dr Nkrumah, slated for September 21.He hinted that the facility is making preparations to mount the bastardised head of Dr Nkrumah's statue, which was retrieved from the public in May this year by the side of the main statue.Mrs Juliana Azumah Mensah, Minister of Tourism, praised Nkrumah for his pioneering role in championing the emancipation of the black race. He praised the US President, Barack Obama and his wife for visiting Ghana, saying it would help to generate more interest in PANAFEST."It is my fervent hope that we will make it possible for this attraction to be developed to the highest level possible," she added. Mr Osman Foday Alhassane, Sierra Leonean Ambassador to Ghana, praised Ghana for the programme that sought to celebrate the emancipation of the black race and urged Africans to move forward in life and not to blame slavery for all their woes.

Fun Galore at Cartoon Network Kids Festival

It was a hidden fun basket let open at the Aviation Social Centre over the weekend as several children from many parts of Accra and its environs gathered and mingled with one another and competed in teams named after their favourite cartoon characters such as Batman, Ben 10, Bunny, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Tom and Jerry and many more.
It was such a delight to see the children playing, laughing and learning at the same time. This was a sight that certainly sent one reminiscing about his childhood and all the fun associated with it. The day was also an opportunity for many of the children to get to network and make new friends. The children took part in activities such as athletics, tug of war, lime and spoon racing, basketball, bouncy castles, Indomie sponsored eating competition and so many more. Young and pretty Ruth Tetteh from the St. Benedict School, Dansoman, emerged winner of the tough musical chairs competition, beating 14 other contestants. “I always want to win, no matter how tough the competition. I’m very happy to be the winner” Ruth said, all smiles.
The adults also participated in the fun activities as they cheered their children to victory in the various competitions. Some of them were also lucky enough to catch up with old friends and colleagues. These adults had so much to talk about as they shared among themselves the challenges in their individual lives and the feats they have chopped in their diverse endeavours. Certainly and more importantly, as the adults watched their wards continue to have quality fun, they shared among themselves also the challenges of raising their kids, the new ways of good parenting and practical ways of dealing with today’s children.
There were also corporate groups such KLP (publishers of children’s books), GT Bank as well as Ghana Commercial Bank who seized the opportunity to tell parents about the GCB KidiStar (Kids Account). They advised all parents to invest in their children’s future by taking advantage of the stimulating and rewarding GCB package to give their children a financial head start.
There were lots of good food and music as they children fraternized and competed healthily through interesting games and other playing activities. The winners from the various activities were also presented with prizes from Tigo, Indomie, GCB and Global Media Alliance. YFM’s Hasira, the MC for the day gave the children and their parents a really nice experience with very interesting tales and activities.
This is the third festival organized yearly by Global Media Alliance with support from Cartoon Network. The Cartoon Network Kids Festival is a platform that offers a relaxing atmosphere for children to spend quality time together, learn through healthy competitions and shape their learning abilities. The fair also provides an avenue for children to acquire team building skills, unearth hidden talents while offering parents the opportunity to network and share parenting experiences.
