The National Security Coordinator Lt.Col. Larry Gbevlo Lartey has stressed the need for the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) and National security Council to work together to effectively respond professionally to accident involving exposure of nuclear and radioactive materials in Ghana.
The Coordinator said this at the formal opening ceremony of a four meeting designed for the physical protection of nuclear and radioactive material and facilities meeting in Accra on Monday. The meeting was made of twenty-five participants from various nuclear facilities in and around African jointly organized by the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In this new global trend, there are more than 4,000 outfits such as mines, hospital and agro-processing sectors where radioactive materials are constantly in use. Lt.Col. Gbevlo Lartey whose speech was read on his behalf by the Deputy National Security Coordinator Mr.Edzi Golo Kosivi-Degear said, apart from accidents involving the use of nuclear and radioactive materials, some rogues could engage in acts involving sabotage and theft of nuclear assets with devastating effects on lives and property.
He therefore stated that, GAEC should be in position to rule out such occurrences by putting in place directives to detect such activities at workplaces which posed danger to various lives. He therefore urged IAEA to support countries to combat, sabotage and malicious acts involving nuclear and radioactive materials and work closely with each country to ensure its safety. Government is ready to support all works in nuclear applications.
The Deputy Director General of GAEC Prof. Yaw Serfor Amarmah commended the IAEA for choosing Ghana for the meeting and pledge total support in making the meeting an effective one.
