Today is Akwatia elections - Who Wins?

Today, Tuesday August 18 2009 Baba Jamal, the Eastern Region Deputy Minister, will lock horns once again with Dr Kofi Asare of the NPP; this time not in a full election, but a re-run of six polling stations at the Akwatia Constituency.It is a volatile constituency and already the chief of Akwatia, Osabarima Kofi Boateng III has cautioned people who would take the law into their own hands and disturb the peace of the town that they would not be tolerated.The community, he said would not sit down unconcerned for anyone to indulge in indiscipline or create disorder during the limited polls.Though all attention is focused on the NDC and NPP candidates, there are others also in the race. They include Mr. Samuel Agyei of the Convention Peoples' Party (CPP) and two Independent candidates, Mr. Basil Ahiable and Mr. Samuel Abrokwah.In the main poll on December 7 2008, the NPP candidate, Dr Kofi Asare, had taken an unassailable lead. That was when the counting was disrupted in the six constituencies necessitating tomorrow's re-run.So who would be declared winner by close of day tomorrow? Pollster Ben Ephson, Editor of The Dispatch told The Mail over the weekend that NDC's Baba Jamal could as well throw in the towel because the figures just don't favour him!A GNA report also published last week said, "The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is most likely to win the August 18 re-run of elections in six polling stations in the Akwatia constituency...But the victory would not assure the party the Akwatia seat which, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is highly tipped to retain."The report said it is "because the NPP's candidate, Dr Kofi Asare, goes into the elections a favourite, having beaten NDC's Mr. Baba Jamal by 3,079 votes in the 83 out of 89 polling stations counted on December 7 last year."The re-run is taking place at the following polling stations: Presbyterian High School, Yoruba Mosque A, Yoruba Mosque B, Lorry Station A, Lorry Station B and the AME Zion Church, all at Akwatia.So who would be declared winner by close of day tomorrow?
