PRESIDENT KUFUOR COMMISSIONS NEW MINISTRY OF DEFENCE OFFICE COMPLEX


The President of the Republic of Ghana and the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces John Agyekum Kufour have commissioned a 120 office complex for the Ministry Of Defence in Accra. "The unique architecture has already made this building one of the distinct landmarks of the city". The building came to fruition through the help of the Chinese government and extended sincere appreciation to them. President Kufuor said the nation was happy that the forces had rediscovered and stuck to their mandate, as enshrined in the national constitution. This has contributed in no small measure to the peace, security and steady development which the whole nation is enjoying. He further stressed that to equip the military for its complex tasks; government has endeavored to improve educational facilities with the military. It is possible now to obtain a masters degree in the military Academy. Other opportunities are training for soldiers in both local and overseas institute been enhanced to cover many discipline and make the military more versatile. The President congratulated the military on seeking to support the counter ministry in Britain in developing an enhanced civilian performance of the Ministry of Defence.I urge the Minister of Public Sector Reform and head of Civil Service to explore the possibility of developing the capacity of more civil and public servants to provide some of the specialized services required by the military. He also challenge the nation's universities and management development institutions to develop courses in security and allied fields to help build capacity of both the military and civilian personnel in response to present and emerging challenges. President Kufuor called on security agencies including the military to keep law and order and protect the security of the nation during and after the elections. "The society expects nothing short of professionalism and impartiality at all times. Do not disappoint the people of Ghana and the many people worldwide who hold the Ghana Armed Forces in High Esteem". The Minister of Defence Albert Kan-Dapaah congratulated the people of China and the former minister of Defence Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor who had general oversight of the office complex including other development in the various Barracks over his 7 years term. He also commented on the militaries receiving its share of the budgetary allocation.. The project started in April 2007 with the speaker of Parliament jointly cutting sod with His Excellency Jia Qingling, chairman of 10th National Committee of the Chinese people political consultative conference on 19th April 2007 .The total cost of the building was $6.75m with Ghana providing $1.75 and Chinese offering $5m as a friendly gesture to the then minister Dr.Kwame Addo Kufuor.
