KASA'S CONCEPT FOR UP-COMING ROUND TABLE DISCUSSIONS IN ACCRA.

MAIN AGENDA FOR DISCUSSION :
Natural Resource And Environment: Media As An Effective Advocacy Partner In Shaping Public Opinion And Influencing Policy .

Rationale behind the roundtable discussion
At a critical time for Ghana’s natural resources and environment, when the challenges of natural resource revenues, adverse environmental and social impact and community livelihood have become top priorities of Ghana’s policy discussions, the work of Kasa in promoting media engagement in NRE discussions is as timely and topical as ever. The core areas of Kasa’s work focuses on capacity building and provision of both funding and technical support to civil society, research and media organisations as well as facilitating effective engagement with policy makers. Kasa’s relevance to the natural resource and environmental agenda is closely linked to promoting transparency and accountability within the NRE sector. By providing a forum that brings together civil society and media organisations in the broader framework, Kasa offers a unique platform for facilitating policy discussions, and strengthening the capacity of civil society and media organisations to promote accountability and transparency in the natural resource and environmental sector with the purpose of reducing poverty.

Objective
The roundtable discussion seeks to provide the platform for a constructive discussion on the media’s role in shaping public opinion and influencing policy discussions, thus helping to identify the nature and modalities for active engagement of the media in NRE discussions. Specifically;
To raise awareness about the opportunities for the media to enhance accountability and sustainable exploitation of mineral and natural resources including forest products.
To stimulate thinking and interest about new partnerships with civil society, that both media and CSOs can work together in a concerted effort to influence policy in the NRE sector.
To identify challenges needed to be addressed in order to make the use of the media as an effective advocacy tool in the NRE sector.

Expected outcomes
Media organizations have gained a better understanding of the natural resource and environment sector.
Increased understanding of the role of the media as agents for advocacy in NRE governance.
Media identify the way forward for effective partnership and engagement with civil society
Increased media coverage on the natural resource management and environment issues.

Format of the meeting
The meeting will comprise two main presentations. The first will take a broader look at what makes the news in the media with respect to natural resources and environment and practical ways in which the media can be engaged successfully. The second presentation will focus on media as an advocacy mechanism to influence policy within the NRE sector. Each presentation is expected to generate discussions on fostering partnership with civil society.
